Minimalist baby essentials checklist

We consulted with other parents and used our own experience to create this ultimate list of baby items that you will actually need.

1. Diapering essentials

This is our complete list of diapering essentials for newborns that will make diapering easier.

Diapering essentials for babies

Diapers

This may be an obvious option because there is no way you can go without diapers. Diapers are an essential item for every newborn.

Out of the many options available, you need to find a brand that provides comfort and keeps your baby dry throughout the day and night, and reduces the risk of diaper rash and discomfort.

We tried various brands and the ones that worked great were Healthy Baby diapers. We highly recommend this brand.

Cloth diapers

We used cloth diapers in conjunction with disposable diapers. Not only is this a sustainable and cost-effective option, but cloth diapers also help in toilet training.

Charlie Banana makes great reusable cloth diapers that are gentle on your baby’s delicate skin. This helps to minimize the accumulation of disposable diaper waste.

Wipes

Baby wipes are convenient for quick clean-ups and to maintain hygiene during diaper changes.

We also got our wipes from Healthy Baby. These wipes are gentle on your baby’s skin and free from harsh chemicals.

Consider these eco-friendly, biodegradable, and reusable wipes to reduce waste and promote sustainability.

Rash cream

Our baby did not develop rashes with the Healthy Baby diapers. But we still used rash cream just in case.

This rash cream by Hello Bello worked great for us. It is a natural rash cream without unnecessary additives or harmful chemicals.

Changing pad

Even if you have a changing table, a changing pad is helpful whether you are at home or on the go. Simply fold it and put it in your diaper bag when you go out.

Changing table

A changing table is a helpful addition to your baby’s nursery.

We like this minimalist changing table by Children of Design because it saves a lot of space.

Another great option is this budget-friendly changing station by UPPAbaby that you can place on your bed to change your child and then pack away when you are done.

This saves a lot of space in your nursery or baby’s room.

Diaper pail

A diaper pail is a helpful item to have to contain odors and keep your nursery smelling fresh.

We tested a few diaper pails and the one we liked was the Ubbi diaper pail because it requires minimal maintenance and uses eco-friendly liners that can help maintain a clean and odor-free environment while minimizing waste.

You can see our list of the best diaper pails for cloth diapers.

Bins and totes

Bins and totes, like this Ubbi Diaper Caddy, are versatile storage solutions for organizing diapers, wipes, and other diapering essentials.

They will help you streamline your diaper-changing routine and ensure everything is easily accessible when you need them.

Diaper Bag

Organize all of your baby essentials when you are out and about. Check out our friends at the Baby Cubby to find a diaper bag that suits your needs.

2. Sleeping essentials

This minimalist list of sleeping essentials will promote safe and comfortable sleep.

Baby sleeping essentials

Topponcino

The Topponcino is a soft, portable mattress-like cushion used to provide a secure and comfortable space for your newborn.

The Topponcino makes it easy to carry your baby from place to place without waking them up and is also great for tummy time.

Out of all baby loungers and pillows, we think this is a must-have item.

Crib

A crib is not for everyone but if you opt to get a crib, make sure that it follows all safety guidelines.

Dadada has a good reputation for quality and safety and the Domino 2-in-1 Convertible Crib will ensure your baby’s safety while they sleep.

Crib mattress

Choose a firm and breathable mattress that promotes healthy sleep and reduces the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Our choice is the Newton Crib Mattress because it is highly breathable (yes, we tested it). You can see our full review of the Newton Mattress.

Crib sheets

The Newton Crib Mattress also comes with soft crib sheets that add coziness to the crib and protects the mattress from stains and spills.

Bassinet

A bassinet like the Maxi-Cosi Iora Bedside Bassinet is a great alternative to a crib and allows your baby to sleep closer to you.

It also offers easy access for feeding and soothing during the night, promoting bonding and reducing the need for long walks to a separate nursery.

Swaddle blankets

Swaddle blankets are versatile and essential for newborns, providing a cozy and secure feeling that mimics the womb.

They help soothe your baby, promote better sleep patterns, and can help in reducing the startle reflex.

Sleeping sacks

Sleeping sacks are a safe alternative to loose blankets because they provide warmth and security while eliminating the risk of suffocation or entanglement.

These Cocoon Sacks by ergoPouch promote better sleep for your baby and make it easy to change a diaper at night.

Footies to sleep

Some babies don’t like sleeping sacks or swaddles. Onesies or footies are other great options to help your baby sleep comfortably while staying warm.

3. Clothing essentials

Babies do not need a lot of clothes. This list of clothing essentials is all you need.

Baby clothing essentials

Onesies

Trust me, onesies will be one of the only types of clothing your baby will need. They are simple and will keep your baby feeling fresh in the summer.

Socks and gloves

Newborns cannot regulate their body heat as well as adults. I recommend you get some socks and gloves to help them stay warm.

Hats

A hat for both summer and winter is a practical accessory for newborns because it will protect your baby from the elements.

Make sure that you get a hat with a detachable strap to minimize choking hazards.

4. Feeding essentials

Nursing and feeding can be tough for many new moms, but these products will make your experience more enjoyable.

Baby feeding essentials

Nursing pillow

I HIGHLY recommend the Snuggle Me Organic Feeding & Support Pillow

This nursing pillow provides support and proper positioning during breastfeeding and promotes comfort for both your baby and you.

It also helps alleviate strain on the arms, neck, and back and allows you to breastfeed longer and more comfortably.

Breast pump

There are many breast pumps available but I recommend a hands-free breast pump. The Willow Wearable Breast Pump is by far the best option.

It will help you to pump breast milk while balancing your responsibilities and continue providing breast milk for your baby.

I also recommend you get their pumping bras that go with the Willow Pump.

Bottles

Nanobebe is one of the top brands that make quality baby bottles. The anti-colic nipple will help your baby feed comfortably.

But the biggest benefit is the breast-like silicone because it feels very close to the real boob. This will help your baby transition from your breast to the bottle easily.

Milk pouches

Milk pouches (or milk bags) are convenient storage containers for breast milk. Simply pour extra milk and freeze it for later.

Burp cloths

Don’t just use any type of cloth to burp your baby. Burp cloths are absorbent and soft and will protect your clothes from spit-up and milk spills during and after feeding.

Nipple shield

Trust me, your baby will bite your nipple hard! A nipple shield is a thin silicone cover that you place over your nipple during breastfeeding.

It helps with latch issues, sore nipples, or inverted nipples, and allows your baby to nurse comfortably.

Nipple cream

This is another product that made breastfeeding more enjoyable. Nipple cream is a soothing balm designed to alleviate soreness and discomfort during breastfeeding.

It provides relief for cracked or dry nipples and makes breastfeeding more comfortable.

I HIGHLY recommend it!

Reusable Nursing Pads

Chances are you are going to leak and this can be uncomfortable. Nursing pads are absorbent pads worn inside a bra to collect leaking breast milk.

5. Bathing and skincare essentials

Protect your baby’s delicate skin with these lotions and shampoos.

Baby bathing essentials

Baby Lotion

Baby lotion will help hydrate and nourish your baby’s skin and prevent dryness.

Our top choice is this natural and non-scented lotion by Earth Mama Organics, but they also have scented options if you like scent.

If you use it regularly, it will help maintain the skin’s natural moisture barrier, promoting healthy and happy skin for your little one.

Shampoo and body wash

Another great product by Earth Mama Organics is the Baby Wash. It is designed to be mild and gentle on your baby’s sensitive skin.

Washcloths

You need soft and gentle washcloths when you bathe your baby.

These Green Sprouts Muslin Washcloths are made from hypoallergenic organic cotton and don’t contain formaldehyde or azo dyes, which adds purity and safety to your little one’s delicate skin.

Hooded towels

We absolutely love Green Sprouts because their products are soft and of high quality.

This Muslin Hooded Towel will keep your little one cozy and dry after bath time.

A Bath Flower

A Bath Flower will make bathing your newborn effortless! This bath flower is soft and can be placed in a baby bathtub (we used our sink) to provide added comfort and security during bathing.

It will keep your baby in a safe and stable position to make bath time easier and more enjoyable for both your baby and you.

6. Baby health essentials

These are a MUST and you should carry them almost wherever you go.

Baby health essentials

First aid kit

Make sure you invest in a first aid kit that contains essential items such as bandages, antiseptic ointment, and gauze pads to handle minor injuries or accidents.

Having a well-stocked first aid kit ensures that you can quickly and effectively address any minor medical needs that may arise.

Thermometer

We recommend the Frida Baby thermometer to monitor your baby’s temperature accurately.

It helps you know if your baby has a fever so you can take appropriate measures and seek medical advice if necessary.

Nasal aspirator

The most effective way to clean your baby’s nose is with the Electric NoseFrida. It will suction out stubborn boogers and snot from your baby in a flash.

A friend recommended it to us and now we are recommending it to you!

Baby medicine

Ask your healthcare provider about having a few essential baby medicines in your medicine cabinet to address common ailments such as fever, cough, or pain.

7. Travel and baby-wearing essentials

Whether you are taking a walk at the park or visiting family in another city, these items will ensure your baby’s comfort while you travel.

Baby travel essentials

Car Seat

You cannot go without a car seat. A car seat is a vital safety item for transporting your baby in a vehicle because it provides security and proper positioning, protecting your baby in case of sudden stops or accidents.

The best places to find a car seat for your baby are The Baby Cubby and PishPosh. These sites have a large selection of car seats and other safety gear.

Stroller

A stroller is a must-have item so you can take walks, run errands, or travel with ease.

Again, we recommend The Baby Cubby and PishPosh to find the stroller that fits your needs. You may even qualify for a discount by joining their newsletters.

Baby wrap

Solly Baby has the most comfortable and simple baby wraps. My husband and I loved this wrap.

The biggest plus of the Solly Baby wrap is that it promotes skin-to-skin contact, which has many benefits.

Baby carrier

Baby carriers come in various styles, such as front carriers or backpack-style carriers, catering to different preferences and stages of your baby’s development.

Lille Baby has great options for every parent. But if you are the outdoorsy type, PishPosh will have the right backpack carrier for you.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen is a crucial item for protecting your baby’s delicate skin from harmful UV rays. It helps prevent sunburn and reduces the risk of long-term damage caused by sun exposure.

But make sure you buy the right sunscreen like those from Earth Mama Organics.

These are formulated for babies, with a high SPF and broad-spectrum protection, and follow the recommended guidelines for safe and effective use.

8. Developmental toys and items

Help nurture your child’s cognitive and physical development with the right educational toys.

Developmental toys for babies

Lovevery Play Gym

The Lovevery Play Gym is a thoughtfully designed activity gym that provides a stimulating and developmentally appropriate play environment for your baby.

It comes with many activities that encourage sensory exploration, promote motor skills, and foster cognitive development in a safe and engaging way.

Black and white cards

High-contrast black and white cards are simple yet effective visual stimulation tools for newborns.

You can use these cards during tummy time or as part of interactive play to stimulate your baby’s visual senses and promote focus and engagement.

Crib mobiles

Crib mobiles provide a focal point for your baby to gaze at, stimulating their visual tracking skills and promoting cognitive development.

PishPosh has a great selection of mobiles for your baby’s crib.

Floor mats

Floor mats provide a soft surface for tummy time, crawling, and playing, protecting your baby from hard floors.

You don’t need a fancy floor mat to achieve its purpose. A simple play mat like this reversible one from Maisonnette is all your baby needs to play and learn.

Sensory toys

Sensory toys are designed to engage multiple senses, stimulating your baby’s cognitive and sensory development.

Our favorite stores to buy sensory toys are Hape and MontiKids. These brands offer the best toys to support your child’s development from newborn to childhood.

Rattles

Rattles are classic and versatile toys that offer both auditory and tactile stimulation for babies. You can also find a large selection of rattles on MontiKids.
