Choosing a mattress for your child can be an overwhelming and tedious process. So we did all of the work for you and wrote this in-depth and honest Newton Twin Mattress review.

We tested the Newton Twin Mattress to evaluate its breathability, washability, comfort, safety, firmness, and weight.

And the results did not disappoint. We were very surprised by the quality of this mattress and consider the Newton Kids’ Twin Mattress the best and safest mattress to add to your child’s bedroom.

It is the perfect combination of quality and safety, which makes this mattress a top choice.

But wait, there’s more! Head over to Newton Baby and use the code Latinx35 to save $35 on products over $175!

Our quick verdict:

Newton Baby claims that the Kids’ mattress is 100% breathable and washable. So we personally tested the mattress over a series of days to validate this claim. Here is our rating:

  1. Breathability: The mattress is very breathable even with the cover on. We were able to breathe comfortably. We gave it 5 out of 5 stars.

  2. Washability: We were impressed by how easy it was to wash the core and cover. We gave it 5 out of 5 stars.

  3. Comfort: The mattress is comfortable but a bit hard for our taste. We gave it 4 out of 5 stars.

  4. Firmness: The mattress is very firm and we felt like it aligns with AAP’s firmness recommendation for infant mattresses. We gave it 5 out of 5 stars.

  5. Weight: This is by far the lightest mattress we’ve seen. Made of 90% air and 10% food-grade polymer, you’re basically sleeping on air. We gave it 5 out of 5 stars.

  6. Our overall rating: 4.8 out of 5 stars. The Newton Twin Mattress exceeded our expectations!

We’ll explain in more detail how we tested the mattress. We’ll also talk about the specs of the mattress and what you should consider when you buy the Newton Kid’s Twin Mattress.

But before we proceed, we want to thank Newton Baby for providing the mattress so we can bring you this in-depth review. This review and tests are 100% our own.

Newton Twin Mattress review

Let’s get to the main part of this article since this is why you are here.

Something that resonates with every parent is sleep safety. We all want to make sure that our children are safe when they sleep.

For us, having a mattress that is breathable was a top priority. Not only can our child breathe comfortably, but the mattress would also prevent our child from overheating.

To find out if the Newton Kids’ Twin Mattress was a good choice, we put it through a series of tests to evaluate its overall safety.

So let’s dive right in and see if the Newton Twin Mattress lives up to the hype.

Breathability

The first test we performed was the breathability test.

Why is this important?

Well, the main reason is because if babies and kids flip over to their stomach when they sleep, they can end up with their face up against the mattress, which increases the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends a breathable mattress over a non-breathable mattress. Following the AAP’s recommendation, we tested the Newton Twin Mattress’ breathability.

The mattress core is made with a patented Wovenaire technology that is composed of 90% air and 10% food-grade polymer (more on this later).

To do this test, we placed the mattress on the floor without the cover. We then smashed our faces against the mattress core and took a few deep breaths.

To our surprise, we were able to breathe with no problem. There are so many air gaps in the core that allows for a constant flow of air.

However, children do not sleep on the core by itself. The twin mattress comes with a ½” thick cover that is also 100% breathable. You would think that the ½” thick cover would reduce its breathability, right?

Newton twin mattress breathing test

Well, we put the cover on and tested the mattress one more time.

And once again, we were able to breathe through the cover and core without a problem. Honestly, we haven’t come across a mattress that allows you to breathe easily.

Our breathability rating: 5 out of 5 stars!

Washability

This one is a no brainer. Washing the cover is as easy as washing clothes: just remove the cover and throw it in your washer.

Newton Baby provides washing instructions for the cover:

  • Unzip prior to wash & dry
  • Machine wash cold, alone, with detergent
  • To refresh, add ½ cup baking soda to wash
  • Tumble dry low thoroughly on low heat setting
  • Do NOT hang dry

However, what was impressive to us and something we haven’t seen elsewhere is the washable core.

We have never tried washing a normal foam and spring mattress simply because we can’t. It would be hard to get dust and dirt out.

The Wovenaire technology of the Newton Kids’ Twin Mattress makes it super easy to wash. Simply remove the cover, take the core to your shower or tub, and rinse it with water.

You can apply some soap or mild detergent, shake the water off, and air dry it.

To do this test, we went above and beyond to see how washable the core was. We threw some dirt on the core and got it nicely dirty.

We took it to our shower where we sprayed it with warm water and to our surprise, everything came right off!

Newton twin mattress washability

Unlike a foam mattress that will absorb all the dirt and stay wet for days, the Newton Twin Mattress had no dirt left and was completely dry in a matter of a couple of hours.

To get it fully dry, we placed it outside in a shady area and not directly under the sun because it could warp since it is a polymer.

One thing worth mentioning is that washing the core also keeps it mold-free, hair-free, and bacteria-free.

Our washability rating: 5 out of 5 stars!

Comfort for better sleep

For this test, we had to compare the comfortability of the Newton Twin Mattress to our own foam mattress.

We are used to sleeping on our own bed so trying to get some rest in a new mattress felt a bit weird.

However, after laying down on the Newton Twin Mattress for about 10 minutes, we started to feel more comfortable.

But laying on the mattress for 10 minutes is not enough to bring you an in-depth review, so we actually slept on the twin mattress for one whole night!

Newton Twin Mattress sleep test

The mattress is comfortable but we felt like it was too firm for our taste. We are used to our bed that sinks a bit when we lay down. I guess we are just so used to a softer foam mattress.

However, our child sleeps comfortably in her Newton mattress. So if she doesn’t complain, then its comfortability is top notch.

Our comfort rating: 4 stars out of 5 based on our experience. However, if our daughter was to rate this mattress, we’re sure she would give it 5 stars.

Firmness

Firmness is another top consideration when you buy a mattress for your child.

We had to do some research to better understand mattress firmness. Basically, firmness tells you how soft or hard a mattress is.

Mattress manufacturers use a 10-point scale to rate the firmness of the mattress. A rating of 1 means that the mattress is very soft, and a rating of 10 means that the mattress is very firm.

Mattress Firmness Scale

A firmer mattress provides more spinal alignment whereas a softer mattress is great for relieving pressure.

But what is the appropriate firmness for a kid’s mattress?

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), soft beds should be avoided as children may roll onto their stomachs, increasing the risk of suffocation.

The AAP recommends firm, flat beds that maintain their shape and do not indent or conform to the baby’s head, nor they lose their shape when you add a fitted sheet.

To test the firmness of the Newton Kids’ Twin Mattress, we laid on our back to see if the mattress deformed.

We were surprised by how firm the twin mattress is. It did not lose its shape nor it contoured to our body as we laid there.

Newton Twin Mattress firmness test

We also tested the firmness by laying face down to see if the mattress would assume the shape of our face. As expected, it did not!

When we compared it to our foam mattress, our face sank into the mattress and our breathing was almost completely blocked.

So even with our face pressed down against the Newton Twin Mattress, we can breathe through the core but also through the sides of our nostrils.

This makes us feel a lot more comfortable knowing that our child can also breathe comfortably.

We couldn’t find any information on Newton’s website about the firmness rating, but based on our research and AAP’s recommendations, we think the firmness of the Newton Twin Mattress is somewhere around 9-10 in the firmness scale.

Our firmness rating: 5 out of 5 stars.

Weight

Last but not least, the weight test. Let’s revisit the design of this mattress. The Newton Kids’ Twin Mattress is made of 90% air and 10% food-grade polymer.

So the mattress should weigh virtually nothing, right?

Food-grade polymer, which is a lightweight material, takes the least amount of space by volume. So surprisingly, the twin mattress is very light compared to other options available on the market.

It is so light that even our toddler can move it around!

Our weight rating: 5 out of 5 stars.

What makes the Newton Kids’ Twin Mattress unique?

Now that you know how safe this mattress is, let’s talk about the details and what makes the Newton Kids’ Mattress a must-have for every child.

Size

The Newton Twin Mattress is made in the United States and comes in one size, 38” x 75” x 5.5”. It has a low profile that makes it suitable for bunk beds and trundle beds.

We received the mattress in two packages. One package contained the cover and the other package contained the 3-piece core. Putting the mattress together was very easy.

Wovenaire core

We’ve mentioned the patented Wovenaire technology before.

But what is it? It’s just an oversized package of ramen noodles. Just kidding, but it does look like it.

Wovenaire core of Newton Twin Mattress

Well, we know that 90% of the mattress is just air. So literally your child is sleeping on air. The other 10% is food-grade polymer.

Food-grade polymer is the same kind of polymer used in yogurt containers. These polymers are specifically designed and manufactured to meet the regulatory requirements and safety standards set by various food regulatory bodies.

So if this type of polymer is safe to use in food, it for sure is safe to sleep on.

And just to add another bonus point, the twin mattress is 100% recyclable. So you will feel good knowing that you are also helping the environment!

Hypoallergenic

Standard foam mattresses can trap all kinds of nastiness, including dust mites.

Glen Needham, a retired professor of entomology at Ohio State University stated, “Every mattress is a crime scene in terms of how it gets inoculated with mites.”

Dust mites are the leading trigger for asthma and allergies. The proteins in dust mite feces can cause allergic reactions like watery eyes, a runny nose, and, in severe cases, asthma attacks.

So the Newton Kids’ Twin Mattress is the best mattress for kids with asthma and/or allergies.

Great for potty training

As of the date of this post, we are potty training our toddler.

Accidents happen, especially overnight. The last thing we need is a mattress full of pee, bacteria, and a strong uncomfortable odor.

The Newton Twin Mattress takes care of this issue by being 100% washable. If your child has an accident, just take the 3-piece Wovenaire core to your shower and wash it off.

Hold on, that means that pee will go through the core and to my floor or carpet!

Newton twin mattress water test

Actually no! This was also one of my concerns and I was impressed to see that water did not leak through.

I poured about 3 ounces of water on the mattress, and the cover absorbed most of the water. The core felt a little moist but no water leaked to my floor.

But if you still want an extra layer of protection, Newton Baby also offers a Waterproof Organic Twin Mattress Pad

This mattress pad is also 100% washable, so you don’t have to worry about your child sleeping on a stinky mattress. It pairs great with the Twin Mattress!

GreenGuard Gold Certified

Another great benefit and one that puts the Newton Twin Mattress ahead of its competition is the GreenGuard Gold certification, which is administered by UL Environment, a division of Underwriters Laboratories.

The GreenGuard Gold certification is an industry-recognized standard for indoor air quality and product emissions, and is awarded to products that meet rigorous criteria for low chemical emissions.

To obtain GreenGuard Gold certification, the mattress had to undergo extensive testing and evaluation to ensure that it met the strict emission limits for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other harmful chemicals.

VOCs are chemicals that can be released as gasses from various products, including paints, adhesives, and furnishings, and they can have negative health effects when present in high concentrations indoors.

This certification will bring you peace of mind knowing that your child is breathing clean air, and not harmful chemicals.

100 night trial, guarantee

This is another perk that Newton offers. Newton will give you 100 nights to try the Twin Mattress risk-free.

If you or your little one don’t like it, you can return it at their expense for a full refund. Note that free returns apply to mattresses bought on Newton’s website.

Things to consider when you buy the Newton Twin Mattress

Overall this is a great mattress that is very safe. In our personal opinion after doing a series of tests ourselves, the only thing you need to consider when you buy this mattress is the price.

The cost of the mattress is $499.99 and $79.99 for the waterproof twin mattress pad. The price is higher than other kid mattresses but remember that you are paying for quality, safety, and comfort.

AND don’t forget that you can save $35 on products over $175 by using my code Latinx35.

Sure, you can get a cheaper mattress for about $60 but that’s exactly what you are getting, a CHEAP mattress that can compromise your child’s safety.

So is the Newton Twin Mattress worth it?

Absolutely. Safety should be your top priority and even though this mattress will cost you a good penny, the safety of your child is priceless.
