We researched, tested, and selected the best Montessori high chair that nurtures your child’s autonomy and fosters positive eating habits.
Our top pick is the Stokke Tripp Trapp High Chair because it gives your child freedom of movement, promotes independence, and is modeled after the Montessori method.
Unlike a standard high chair, the Stokke Tripp Trapp high chair has given my daughter a positive experience when we come together at the table.
And as she gets older, we are modifying this high chair so she continues to develop her motor skills and independence.
Many high chairs are being advertised as “Montessori,” but as a Montessori Guide, I know which high chairs closely align with the Montessori philosophy.
So below are the only three high chairs that I feel are truly Montessori-inspired and will help foster your child’s overall development.
The best Montessori high chair that grows with your child, from newborn to childhood (and even through adulthood).
It was fairly easy to pick the Stokke Tripp Trapp High Chair as our number one choice because it offers the most developmental benefits compared to other high chairs we tested.
What we like the most about this high chair is its versatility. If you have a newborn, you can get the Newborn Set that easily attaches to the high chair.
The newborn set lifts your baby to the height of your table so they can join you during meal times.
When your child transitions into infancy, you can add the baby seat which can also be adjusted to the height of your table.
Now that my daughter can climb, we can adjust the seat and footrest of the high chair so she can get on and off independently.
But the biggest benefit of all is that the way the high chair is designed allows your baby to get closer to the table, and this promotes a sense of inclusion. A standard high chair is too bulky and isolates your child.
Personally, we feel more connected when our daughter joins us during meal times and we feel like this also provides a positive experience when we eat together.
And as a bonus, this high chair will make the entire baby-led weaning process easier because your child will learn to eat directly from the table and not rely on a tray.
The only inconvenience I found was that you need an Allen wrench to adjust the footrest. It is not hard to adjust it but it does take a few minutes.
This is a 5-in-1 high chair that is designed to accommodate your child’s needs every step of the way, from 3 months to childhood.
The Steps High Chair is another great product by Stokke. We like the minimalist design that matches the style of our home.
It comes with a baby seat that is great for a 3-month-old baby but if you have a newborn, you can also purchase the Bouncer that comes at an extra cost.
I think the bouncer is great and will make feeding easier but you may only use it for about 3 or 4 months. It costs $209 so you decide if it is worth the investment.
Similar to the Stokke Tripp Trapp High Chair, you can bring your baby closer to the table to bond with them as you eat together.
The seat and footrest can also be adjusted for optimum ergonomics. It is easier to adjust than the Tripp Trapp High Chair. Simply loosen the knobs on the footrest to adjust the height.
One thing to note is that it is a bit more expensive than the Tripp Trapp High Chair if you buy all the accessories for newborns.
This is a stylish and premium high chair made of quality materials but it is a bit expensive and some accessories are sold separately.
First off, don’t let the price scare you. If it was within our budget, we would have kept this high chair. If you can afford it, then I highly recommend it.
The best feature of the Bugaboo Giraffe High Chair is the adjustable footrest. It is easier to adjust compared to the two Stokke high chairs I mentioned above.
There is a button located on the back of the footrest that you press. Press this button and you can slide the footrest up and down. That’s it!
The seat can also be adjusted similarly. It doesn’t go up and down as much but it does slide forward a bit, and this helps you bring your baby even closer to the table.
We also like how sturdy it is due to the European beechwood used to make the legs of this high chair.
European beechwood is one of the highest-quality materials you can find and is also FSC®-certified.
The baby seat comes with a 5-point harness that is easy to adjust and has a lot of padding so your child sits comfortably in the high chair.
The only downside is that the Bugaboo Giraffe High Chair and its accessories are more expensive compared to any of the Stokke high chairs I recommend.
Again, if it is within your budget, this is a top-quality high chair that can be added to your home.
One of the many things I like about the Montessori method is that your child learns to do many things independently.
Unlike a standard high chair, your child will be able to access a Montessori high chair without your assistance.
The footrests and seats are designed to be adjustable and once your child has developed coordination and balance, they will be able to get on and off the Montessori high chair on their own.
You may also notice that the Montessori high chairs I recommend come without a tray, but you can order one if you want.
The reason they typically don’t have a tray is that your child can sit closer to the table and be fully involved when you eat as a family.
The Montessori method encourages that your child is fully involved in your everyday life, especially during meal times.
A tray will make it difficult for your child to join you at the table because it is bulky and wide, and this isolates your child.
The main differences between a Montessori high chair and a traditional high chair are their design and their approach to supporting your child’s development.
Montessori high chairs are typically made of natural materials like wood and have a simple, minimalist design.
They have an adjustable seat and footrest to support good posture and growing independence.
Traditional high chairs are typically made of plastic and have a more complex design that includes a tray, a padded seat, and other features to make it more convenient for you, but don’t offer any developmental benefits for your child.
Yes, this is another great option that also fosters your child’s independence.
The additional benefit of a Montessori weaning table is that your child can set up the table, remove dirty dishes from the table, and clean up after themselves.
You can read more about the benefits of a Montessori weaning table and see which weaning tables I recommend.
These are the only Montessori high chairs I recommend because I feel they are closely designed to follow the Montessori approach.
