There is no specific age to transition from a crib, bassinet, or co-sleeping to a Montessori floor bed. In our experience, we waited until our daughter was able to sit up and roll on her own, which was at 5 months.
However, there are families that begin using the floor bed sooner. We understand how challenging it can be for parents to leave their babies on their beds all night.
To make the transition smoother, you can have your baby nap during the day or play on the bed so your baby becomes familiar with the floor bed.
Once your baby is used to the new environment, you can begin the transition to the floor bed.
Your baby will roll out of bed, no question about it. It is important to babyproof your baby’s room as much as you can before you introduce the Montessori floor bed. With that said, floor beds are very safe.
The worst thing that can happen is your baby falling off the bed and either crying or continuing to sleep. This is going to happen often at first because your baby may not be used to sleeping in a bar-free bed.
If your baby falls off the bed, remember that the floor bed is only a few inches thick. This is a lot safer than falling off a crib or bassinet that is usually 3 or 4 feet high.
There is no ideal age to have your infant or toddler sleep in a floor bed. You can do it right after birth, wait until your baby is a few months old, or when your child enters kindergarten.
